Happy 4th of July, Heights neighbors! Whether you’re spending the day grilling in the backyard, finding a good spot to catch the Downtown fireworks show, or explaining to your dog (again) that fireworks aren’t personal, it’s a joy to celebrate community and country with all of you!
Included in this month’s newsletter is my favorite photo from the 20th Annual Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt After Party, featuring my own crew enjoying the fun at the Fire Station! Thank you to everyone who helped make that weekend so special. From the scavenger hunts to the helmet hair, it was a perfect start to summer in the Heights.
Looking ahead, I hope to see you on Monday, July 14 at our Great American Pie Contest! I’ll be there as one of your judges (yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds), sampling entries to award in fabulous categories: Sweet, Savory, Junior Baker (for 17yo and younger), and Presentation. Whether you’re baking or just tasting, this event is as cozy and competitive as it gets. Come connect, satisfy your sweet tooth, cheer on the bakers, and maybe leave with bragging rights.
As always, I’d love to meet you, hear your ideas, and dream big about our neighborhood’s future together. Don’t be a stranger… especially if you come bearing pie!
Love & Blessings,
Hannah White
Do you have a pie recipe that never fails to impress? Now’s your chance to show it off at the Great American Pie Contest, happening during our July General Meeting happening on Monday, July 14 at 6:30pm. This friendly neighborhood competition invites bakers of all ages and skill levels to enter their best pies in one or more of the following categories: Sweet, Savory, Junior Baker, and Presentation.
To qualify, each contestant must bring two pies for judging—so our panel of six judges has plenty to sample as they decide which pies rise to the top.
Even if you're not baking, this is a perfect evening to enjoy some good old-fashioned fun, cheer on your neighbors, and maybe even pick up some inspiration for your next pie. There will be great company, delicious flavors, and a chance to be part of a Heights tradition that celebrates creativity, community, and a love of sweet treats. Whether you're entering a pie or just coming to join the festivities, we hope to see you there—because everyone’s invited!
A special thank you to John Frels for chairing this event🎉🥧

July 2025 Yard of the Month
921 Heights Boulevard
Amy Harris has brought creativity and heart to the historic 1903 home she’s lovingly cared for since moving to 921 Heights Boulevard in 2019. Drawing on her passion for gardening and rock hunting, she designed a landscape full of vibrant blooms—hibiscus, passion vine, roses, and more—paired with personal touches like koi-shaped juniper plantings, trellised mandevilla, and antique globe lampposts glowing red at night. A striking crystal soapstone and her collection of petrified wood add sculptural beauty throughout the space. The result is a garden that feels both artful and deeply rooted in history.
Special thanks to New Roots Landscaping Nursery & Antiques for awarding Amy a gift card in recognition of her inspiring yard.

She will bring some sample plants to sell based on her talk, and also info about Houston Cactus and Succulent Society. For payment of any plants, she accepts cash, credit cards, Venmo, Zelle and PayPal.
In Nature Reclaims: Wood Pile, Houston artist Amanda Barry Jones responds to the devastation left by the 2024 storms that swept through Garden Oaks and the Heights—neighborhoods she has called home. Uprooted oaks and pines, once landmarks of these communities, are reimagined in her sculpture as habitats for birds, insects, reptiles, and mammals, all delicately crafted from clay. What first appears as storm debris reveals itself as a scene of renewal, where life emerges from decay. Barry Jones holds an MFA in sculpture and ceramics from Houston Christian University and leads the Art Department at Galveston College. Her work has been widely exhibited across Texas.
