Summer is officially here — and with it come later sunsets, louder ice cream trucks, and children who suddenly forget how bedtime works. (At least, that’s definitely the case in my house.)
Included with this month’s letter is a photo of me with my oldest son, Gaige, and our dear friend, Kyle Buthod, taken while setting up for our May General Meeting. As the owner of Citizens Catering, Kyle is not only a HHA Business Member, but he also catered our last meeting. Did you try those dumplings? Weren’t they delicious?! If you’re hosting any summer soirees, I highly recommend Citizens.
And once you’ve got the snacks covered—why not add a little adventure?
We’re kicking off the season with one of our most beloved traditions: the 20th Annual Houston Heights Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt! On June 7 & 8, riders of all ages will hit the streets on two wheels in search of clues, local gems, and just the right amount of friendly competition. Whether you’re flying solo, wrangling the whole family, or just looking for an excuse to cruise the neighborhood, this event is peak summer fun.
With route options for all ages and abilities, prizes for scavenger pros, and plenty of chances to make memories—it’s not just a ride, it’s an adventure!
And while you're making summer plans, don’t forget to protect your home while you're away. As of June 1, the Heights Constable Patrol Program has been prorated from $385 to $306, making now a great time to enroll in this concierge-style security service. One of the most popular perks this time of year? Vacation Watch—deputies will regularly check your home while you’re gone, and you can even connect your alarm system directly to Constable Dispatch, 24/7.
As always, thank you for everything you do to make this neighborhood so warm and welcoming. Whether we’re riding bikes, sipping lemonade, traveling to wonderful places, or ducking into the A/C after five minutes outside—I’m so grateful we get to do life together in this incredible place we call home: the Houston Heights.
Love & Blessings,
Hannah White

Congratulations to Greg Chapman of 1329 Waverly Street, our June 2025 Yard of the Month! What began as a grassy, empty lot has been lovingly transformed into a vibrant, pollinator-friendly garden that teems with life and color throughout the year. Greg’s deep passion for gardening shines through in every corner of his landscape, from the cattails swaying along the ditch to the echinacea, bee balm, thyme, and native wildflowers that attract butterflies, bees, and even the occasional curious lizard. His garden is a dynamic mix of wild beauty and thoughtful planting, with fragrant sweet olives, oregano, and rosemary, plus a dedicated rose and herb section. Every inch of the yard reflects his belief in working with nature, letting it guide the process. We’re grateful to Wabash Feed & Garden for supporting this recognition with a generous gift card for this month’s well-deserving winner!

Susan Budge’s “Cosmic Kachinas” reflect her deep connection to Native American symbolism and spirituality, drawing on figures like the Koyemsi “Mudhead” and Koshare to explore themes of guidance, nature, and cultural respect. Working in clay, bronze, and stainless steel, her sculptures blend biomorphism and surrealism, rooted in a long career in art and education. Budge’s work has been featured in major collections, including the Smithsonian and Honolulu Museum of Art, and continues to invite reflection on the spiritual and physical worlds.
