Last month’s History in the Heights General Meeting was such a delight! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended—especially our incredible panelists who generously shared their stories. Included with this letter is one of my favorite photos from the night, where I managed to sneak in alongside some dear friends of our neighborhood: Michael Wiesenthal, Paul Carr, Jane Jester Marmion, Terry Burge, Martin Kaplan, and
Laura Virgadamo. The historic Houston Heights Fire Station was packed, and so was our evening—with laughter, nostalgia, and a deeper appreciation for the people who helped shape this one-of-a-kind community. If you missed it, don’t worry—we’re already looking forward to hosting a similar event again next year.
But you don’t have to wait that long to reconnect! Our next General Meeting is happening this Monday, and it’s 'A May Mixer' you won’t want to miss. We’ll have festive mocktails and cocktails from Beyond Bartending, plus time to mingle with neighbors and learn more about the future of Lawrence Park. Come thirsty for community—and something delicious!

As for my kids, they’re already making big summer plans involving popsicles, splash pads, and absolutely zero chores. Here’s to a season full of sunscreen, surprises, and running into each other around the neighborhood—preferably somewhere with strong A/C and stronger iced coffee. I look forward to seeing you and your crew soon!
Love & Blessings,

Love Elementary is seeking caring mentors for their Lion Buddies program for the 2025–26 school year! This rewarding initiative pairs volunteers with students to build positive, one-on-one relationships through monthly after-school meetups.
Lion Buddies meet once a month for one hour (3:10–4:10 p.m.) at the school, enjoying crafts, games, and meaningful conversations. Supplies are provided, and mentors are welcome to bring their own activities too. Students love this program and truly look forward to each visit. May Yard of the Month
312 Moss Street – This charming 1929 cottage has seen its landscape evolve dramatically since 1999, when it featured only two struggling pecan trees and sparse native plants. Over the years, the front yard transformed into a mature shade garden, anchored by towering Water Oaks and Crape Myrtles. In 2024, a full redesign introduced winding Blackstar gravel paths and a curated mix of shade-loving plants like foxtail ferns, hostas, bromeliads, and vibrant coleus. The result is a layered, textured garden that blends beauty with resilience—proof that thoughtful landscaping can completely reshape a home’s outdoor space.
Step into a whimsical world of plants, succulents, and creativity at 802 Ralfallen Street on Saturday, May 10 from 10:00am–11:00am for our next free garden tour, In the Garden of Andrew & Stephanie Lienhard. This enchanting space features pollinator-friendly blooms, bold cacti, and a collection of "catios" where pets, birds, and butterflies peacefully coexist. With a history of transformation, including new Japanese maples and a fast-growing Palo Verde, the Lienhards' evolving garden is a true reflection of community, climate-conscious design, and heartfelt creativity. Bring a friend and prepare to be inspired!
Discover the thought-provoking work of artist Elizabeth Akamatsu, whose sculpture “Sattie” explores the intersection of nature and technology. Inspired by organic forms and the digital age, the piece features bent orange conduit—typically used to protect underground communication lines—shaped to resemble flower petals, symbolizing the way both seeds and information are dispersed. With a background in painting and sculpture, Akamatsu has taught at major Texas universities and exhibited nationally and internationally. Now based in Nacogdoches, her work can be found in public art collections across the country and was featured in True North in 2022 with her sculpture “Cumulus.”
